Hello

I have had to come off methotrexate injections because my liver was being adversely affected. I have just been taking
sulfasalazine waiting for liver to recover. Went for test injection of Gold (10ml) last Thursday and have been unwell/in bed all weekend.
Banging headache and nausea - started a couple of hours after jab. I'm supposed to have weekly injections of 50ml starting this thursday.
Spoke to rheummy nurse today who has suggested I see consultant again before continuing with treatment.

She said it is not the usual side effects of Gold and could be conincidental - has anyone else suffered similar after having Gold jab?

RA is very active at the moment and really struggling with just sulfasalazine so this is a real blow. Consultant mentioned Lefluonide?? as next step. Any advice please

ThanksConfused

Hi Rosie,

Sorry you`re having such a tough time at the moment - hope you start to feel better soon. I can`t offer any views on the Gold injections, as I have never been treated with those. I had to come off MTX because of respiratory problems, and I was put on leflunomide, which played havoc with my liver, so I had to stop that as well. Sulfasalazine never worked for me, nor did cyclosporin, so I was put on anti-TNF therapy, humira. Has anyone mentioned the biologics to you?

I hope you can see your rheumy and discuss things with him/her soon.

Take care,

Kathleen x

Hi Rosie,

The biologics are the anti-TNF drugs, such as enbrel, humira, and infliximab. These are normally considered after you have tried and failed on at least two DMARDs. The process of waiting for the right drug, ie one that works for you, or combination of drugs, is sometimes a long and frustrating process. In my case it was 18 months, which truly tested my sanity!

Do you know how long it will be until you next see your consultant? It may be worth trying to see him/her earlier, if possible.

Take care,

Kathleen x
